Christmas is just around the corner, and with another year nearly over, I find myself reflecting on what I enjoy most about this time of year. Contrary to popular belief, I actually do like Christmas – it’s just that I like it for a different reason. I struggle to switch off at the best of times; my mind’s always whirring with things I want or need to do. But Christmas gives me the rare chance to hit pause, put all that on hold, and just be present with my family (no pun intended).
Of course, the run-up to Christmas is a bit more chaotic, especially with little ones involved. We like to get stuck into the fun, and I’ll never forget one particular Christmas when my eldest daughter’s nursery was in a bind, desperately looking for a dad to dress up as Santa. Now, this was way out of my comfort zone, and I was all set to say no, but my colleague Dale convinced me otherwise. “You’ll regret it if you don’t,” he said. So, reluctantly, I agreed.
I remember the nerves kicking in as the day approached, worried I wouldn’t live up to the children’s expectations – or worse, that I’d ruin the whole thing. But when the day came, it was actually brilliant. The look of pure wonder and excitement on all those little faces was unforgettable. My own daughter, Alba, was absolutely delighted, happily listing off all the things she wanted, blissfully unaware that Santa was really just her dad hiding behind a beard. It was touching, and as much as I initially dreaded it, being part of that magic was something I’ll never forget.
A few weeks later, Alba’s learning journey arrived, and there was a photo of “Santa” (me) with a comment about Personal, Social, and Emotional Development (PSED), capturing that fun memory and linking it to her growth. It’s one of the things I love about Early Years education—the way they make learning fun and full of wonder, where every bit of excitement, curiosity, and adventure becomes an opportunity to grow.
Looking back, I only wish the nursery had Evisense back then. With Evisense, I could’ve had a proper copy of that special photo instead of a snapshot of a photo. But for now, the memory will do!

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas, and may your festive season be filled with laughter, joy, and a few cherished moments worth capturing!
