During the recent half term, I took a rare bit of time off to spend with my wife and children, joining some good friends for a few days in beautiful Woolacombe, Devon. Thankfully, we avoided the “two boroughs, two different half terms” trap this year, so we could actually make it happen! Watching my children interact with other kids in a new setting, gaining confidence along the way, was a real treat.
One particular moment with my eldest daughter stood out. She’s 10 now, and during our stay, she came to me complaining about her bed being uncomfortable. I asked her what she thought we should do about it, and after a thoughtful pause, she confidently suggested we speak to reception to see if they could help. So, off we went, and I watched as she calmly explained to the reception team that she hadn’t slept well and found the mattress uncomfortable. Within half an hour, someone was at our door with a new mattress and a set of apologies for my very pleased daughter.
Now, that interaction might not seem monumental on the surface, but it was one of those subtle yet significant steps on her journey toward adulthood. Handling a real-world issue with maturity and confidence – this is the kind of “Preparing for Adulthood” skill we talk about in schools, but how often do we capture it in action? It struck me that an interaction like this would be valuable to share with her teachers.
Whist I didn’t capture a video of the exchange (as proud as I was, it would’ve felt a bit awkward), a quick Evisense post with a bit of descriptive text would perfectly convey the experience. I could even add a photo of her afterward, looking pleased with her problem-solving win.
For children who face unique challenges, like my niece who has selective mutism, moments like these are especially worth celebrating and sharing with their teachers. They reveal capabilities that aren’t always visible in the classroom and provide insights into growth in real-world situations.
We have tried very hard to make Evisense a perfect tool for both teachers and parents to capture these milestones outside the school gates and give teachers a fuller picture of each child’s development and confidence.
Half term memories like these are priceless, but it’s also reassuring to know they don’t have to stay there. Evisense really can bring the learning journey together, from classroom to home and beyond.
